The Shadow Project:
An Examination of Learning Settings
From the perspective of the student in a learning
environment, observe how various built environment settings support – or don’t support –
the learning experience.
From the student’s seats, observations were
recorded through journaling, supplemented by
sketches and photographs. Characteristics of
learning environments were noted, such as size
and configuration of the room, furnishings,
flexibility, presence and use of technology,
illumination (both natural and artificial), sight lines,
and audio quality, such as ability to hear and be
heard and noise, distracting or otherwise.
Features particular to each setting and experience
were noted and compared with others. Findings
were shared with and presented to each of the 13
participating colleges and K-12 institutions.

Briefly, Vision Integrated Planning broadens the
master planning process by, beginning with the
institution’s vision, sequentially incorporating an
environmental scan, academic programs
assessment, enrollment and space analysis, learning
environment analysis, and synthesizing these
analyses, developing a campus master plan based
on data, trends, institutional priorities, and
opportunities and limitations developed from the
study findings.
